Successful business owners, senior executives and investors can apply for migration to Australia in terms of the Business Skills visa category. They will be required to settle permanently in Australia for a minimum period of 2 years and develop new or existing businesses.
Applicants make commitments to develop a business, employ Australians and invest capital. The amount of capital required varies depending on the visa category.
High calibre business migrants whose offshore business/s meet the criteria can lodge a direct permanent residence application in terms of a Business Talent visa.
For others a two-stage arrangement was introduced on 1 March 2003.
Firstly, a Provisional Business Skills visa is granted offshore for a period of four years. This allows applicants to settle in Australia and establish a business in Australia. Then, once the business meets the required level, or they have maintained their eligible investment for the required period of time, business migrants are able to lodge an application for permanent residence in terms of a Business Skills (Residence) visa.
Business migrants may also be able to arrange for one of the State/Territory governments to sponsor them.
